Visiting Roots

Visiting Roots: Roots is located 140 miles north of San Francisco just east of Highway 101. The public is welcome to tour the collection at no charge during work days which are generally held on the first and third Sundays of each month from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Please email Roots to confirm the schedule before visiting.

Membership

Roots has more than 400 members, many of whom are actively maintaining and restoring equipment, building track, serving as officers and directors, writing and editing the newsletter, photographing events, updating the web site and serving as docents and librarians for the Railroad History Project. How you can help

In addition to joining Roots and volunteering for one of the many activities, there are numerous additional ways to support Roots, such as donations of equipment to the collection, donations of materials and services, endowment funds and matching grants. Newsletter

All Roots members receive the newsletter three times per year. The newsletter is noted for extensive in-depth articles and photos on the history of the logging industry in addition to information about current Roots activities. Also view the Highline! archive on this site.
 

Work Day Schedule

Roots has relied heavily on support from the local community and volunteers. Roots work days are generally held on the first and third Sundays of each month from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. For specific information about a given work day or to confirm the schedule please email Roots at mail@rootsofmotivepower.com. The public is welcome to tour the collection at no charge during work days.
 

Officers and Board

The board of directors meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM. For meeting location email Roots mail@rootsofmotivepower.com.
 

History

Roots is an all-volunteer organization founded in 1982 to preserve and restore steam- and diesel-powered equipment used in the California north coast logging industry from the 1850s to the present.
